Nutrients, soluble salts, and pathogenic bacteria in feedlot-pen manure have the potential to cause pollution of the environment. A three-year study (1998-2000) was conducted at a beef cattle (Bos taurus) feedlot in southern Alberta, Canada to determine the effect of bedding material [barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) straw versus wood chips] and season on the chemical and bacterial properties of pen-floor manure. Manure was sampled for chemical content (N, P, soluble salts, electrical conductivity, and pH) and populations of four groups of bacteria (Escherichia coli, total coliforms, and total aerobic heterotrophs at 27 and 39 degrees C). More chemical parameters of manure were significantly (P < or = 0.05) affected by season (SO4, Na, Mg, K, Ca, sodium adsorption ratio [SAR], total C, NO3-N, NH4-N, total P, and available P) than by bedding (K, pH, total C, C to N ratio, NH4-N, and available P). Bedding had no significant (P > 0.05) effect on the four bacterial groups whereas season affected all four groups. Numbers of E. coli and total coliforms (TC) were significantly higher by 1.72 to 2.02 log10 units in the summer than the other three seasons, which was consistent with a strong positive correlation of E. coli and TC with air temperature. The low ratio of bedding to manure in the pens was probably the major cause of the lack of significant bedding effects. Bedding material and seasonal timing of cleaning feedlot pens and land application of manure may be a potential tool to manage nutrients, soluble salts, and pathogens in manure.  相似文献

Summary Multiple mating by queens in social Hymenoptera with single locus sex determination may be an adaptation to reduce the effect of genetic load caused by the production of diploid males, if there is a concave relationship between queen fitness and the proportion of diploid male offspring in the colony. In this situation queens should be selected to reduce the variance in the production of diploid male offspring by multiple mating. It has been suggested that this concave relationship occurs in species such as the honey bee, Apis mellifera, in which reproduction occurs near the peak of colony population. This paper suggests that the timing of diploid male removal may influence mating frequency, with early removal of diploid males favoring multiple mating and late removal of diploid males favoring single mating. This idea is explored in two ways. A mathematical model shows that cell use in the brood area of species that rear young in cells will be more efficient with multiple mating. This would favor multiple mating in species, such as the honey bee, in which brood rearing is constrained by the usable area of the brood chamber. Secondly, comparison of polyandrous honey bees (early removal of diploid males as young larvae) with monandrous fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, and Melipona bees (non-removal of immature diploid males) suggests that in the species without diploid male removal, variance reduction may reduce queen fitness. Suggestions are made for testing this hypothesis.  相似文献

Fourteen organophosphorus esters (OPs) were evaluated for their potential to cause organophosphorus ester induced delayed neurotoxicity (OPIDN) when administered dermally and/or orally to white leghorn hens. The compounds were chlorpyrifos, DEF, dichlorvos, dimethoate, EPN, ethoprop, fenthion, isofenphos, leptophos, merphos, ronnel, tetrachlorvinphos, terbufos, and trichlorfon. DEF induced ataxia if given dermally or orally at over 21 mg/kg/day for up to 90 days. Hens treated with EPN developed irreversible ataxia after repeated exposure to as little as 1.3 mg/kg dermally or 5 mg/kg/day orally, while leptophos was neurotoxic at doses of 6-7 mg/kg/day dermally and 10 mg/kg/day orally. Multiple treatments of chlorpyrifos, terbufos, dichlorvos and dimethoate caused death after varying periods of increasing debility; although birds had difficulty walking, they did not display typical symptoms of OPIDN. Fenthion and isofenphos induced drastic weight loss in hens at low levels of treatment; Isofenphos treated hens developed OPIDN, but died soon afterwards. Dichlorvos given at greater than 6 mg/kg/day po or dermally at 1 mg/kg/day produced cholinergic symptoms and most hens died before the end of the treatment period. At lower levels, dichlorvos did not induce overt ataxia. None of the other compounds in this series induced consistent ataxia whether administered orally or dermally. Ethoprop, with an acute oral LD50 near 5 mg/kg and an acute dermal LD50 of approximately 3 mg/kg, was the most toxic compound tested and could not be fully evaluated for its potential to cause OPIDN.  相似文献

Genetic variation was studied at two polymorphic loci for 3 yr (November 1978–February 1982) in juvenile sand flounder (Rhombosolea plebeia) in Wellington Harbour, New Zealand. The Gpi-1 locus showed a heterogeneity in genotype frequencies, but this was not clearly related to season or to fish length. At the Gpi-2 locus, genotype frequencies were dependent upon length and showed a significant excess of homozygotes in juveniles but not in adults. This latter phenomenon has been reported previously in several species of marine molluscs, and so may be common to marine organisms producing large numbers of pelagic larvae. Reasons for the excess of homozygotes are discussed, and it is suggested that assortative mating is the most likely explanation and that this is an area of marine population genetic research which has been over-looked.  相似文献

Summary A country which truly wishes to preserve the full range of genetic diversity with which it has been endowed must look beyond large biosphere reserves. It must inventory and protect individual species and habitat types in smaller preserves as well. The United States provides an example of a country which has a legacy of preserves. Much of the land that would be necessary for an effective preserve system has already been acquired, but basic information and coordination among agencies is lacking.Dr Francis Roy Thibodeau graduated in Environmental Sciences from Boston College. He later took his Masters in Urban, Social and Environmental Policy, and his Doctorate in Ecology and Environmental Policy, both degrees from Tufts University. ABSTRACT: Understanding the effects of dams on the inundation regime of natural floodplain communities is critical for effective decision making on dam management or dam removal. To test the implications of hydrologic alteration by dams for floodplain natural communities, we conducted a combined field and modeling study along two reaches in the Connecticut River Rapids Macrosite (CRRM), one of the last remaining flowing water sections of the Upper Connecticut River. We surveyed multiple channel cross sections at both locations and concurrently identified and surveyed the elevations of important natural communities, native species of concern, and nonnative invasive species. Using a hydrologic model, HEC‐RAS, we routed estimated pre‐and post‐impoundment discharges of different design recurrence intervals (two year through 100 year floods) through each reach to establish corresponding reductions in elevation and effective wetted perimeter following post‐dam discharge reductions. By comparing (1) the frequency and duration of flooding of these surfaces before and after impoundment and (2) the total area flooded at different recurrence intervals, our goal was to derive a spatially explicit assessment of hydrologic alteration, directly relevant to natural floodplain communities. Post‐impoundment hydrologic alteration profoundly affected the subsequent inundation regime, and this impact was particularly true of higher floodplain terraces. These riparian communities, which were flooded, on average, every 20 to 100 years pre‐impoundment, were predicted to flood at 100 ? 100 year intervals, essentially isolating them completely from riverine influence. At the pre‐dam five to ten year floodplain elevations, we observed smaller differences in predicted flood frequency but substantial differences in the total area flooded and in the average flood duration. For floodplain forests in the Upper Connecticut River, this alteration by impoundment suggests that even if other stresses facing these communities (human development, invasive exotics) were alleviated, this may not be sufficient to restore intact natural communities. More generally, our approach provides a way to combine site specific variables with long term gage records in assessing the restorative potential of dam removal.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: A model for estimating seasonal fecal coliform concentrations in the Tchefuncte River as a function of river discharge was developed. Data on fecal coliform concentration were obtained from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals and were available for a period of 15 years (1975 through 1992) from three locations. Stream flow data were obtained from a gaging station of the U. S. Geological Survey at Folsom, Louisiana. These data were available for 49 years (1943 through 1991). The climate of the area is characterized by different precipitation/runoff mechanisms for the summer and winter seasons. The division for seasons used in this analysis was May through October (summer season), and November through April (winter season). Because of the combined effects of climatic mechanisms causing precipitation and the seasonal variation of evapotranspiration, runoff is greater in the winter season resulting in higher fecal coliform counts in the Tchefuncte River. Statistical analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between fecal coliform concentration and discharge for each season, at each of three sites on the Tchefuncte River.  相似文献
